Fungus Gnats in Your Grow Room: Kill the Larvae, Stop the Damage

Fungus gnats damage roots, spread disease, and are impossible to ignore — here is the 3-week elimination protocol

Fungus gnats look harmless — tiny flies buzzing around your pots. But the larvae are the real problem. They live in the top 2 inches of soil and feed on organic matter AND plant roots, opening pathways for root disease and stunting growth. A bad infestation in a young seedling can kill it in a week. Here is how to eliminate them completely.

Life Cycle (Why Timing Matters)

Fungus gnat eggs hatch in 3–6 days. Larvae feed for 12–14 days in the top 2" of growing medium. They pupate for 3–5 days then emerge as adults who live 7–10 days and lay 100–300 eggs. Total life cycle: ~28 days. This is why treatment needs to run for at least 21 days — you need to kill all active larvae AND intercept all egg cycles.

Three-Weapon Attack

1
BTi soil drench (larvae killer) — Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTi) in products like Gnatrol WDG or Mosquito Bits is a bacteria that kills only fungus gnat larvae on contact. Drench the top 2" of soil every 5–7 days for 3 weeks. Completely safe for plants and beneficial organisms.
2
Yellow sticky traps (adult control) — Place yellow sticky cards just above soil level. They catch flying adults, reducing new egg-laying. This alone won't solve the problem but gives you population data and reduces reinfestation pressure.
3
Let soil dry between waterings — Fungus gnats need moist soil for eggs to survive. Allowing the top 2" of soil to fully dry before each watering kills eggs and deprives larvae of moisture. This is the best long-term prevention measure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do fungus gnats hurt plants?
The adult gnats are mostly harmless annoyances. The larvae are the problem — they feed on root hairs and organic matter in the top 2" of soil. In seedlings and young plants, larval damage can stunt or kill the plant. In mature plants, damage is usually cosmetic unless the infestation is severe.
What is the fastest way to kill fungus gnats?
The fastest approach is a combination of BTi drench (Gnatrol or Mosquito Bits) for larvae plus yellow sticky traps for adults. BTi kills larvae on contact within 24–48 hours. You will not eliminate the adults immediately but will stop reproduction. Full elimination takes 3 weeks to cover the full life cycle.
Can fungus gnats survive in coco or hydro?
Rarely in pure hydroponics (no soil). Coco coir that stays constantly moist can harbor small populations. The best prevention in coco is allowing proper dry-back between waterings and using Hydroguard to protect roots from any larval damage that does occur.
Are fungus gnats the same as fruit flies?
No — they look similar but fungus gnats (family Sciaridae) are smaller and darker than fruit flies. They are attracted to moist soil and decaying plant matter, not fruit. A clear test: fungus gnats hover around pots and soil; fruit flies hover near food and trash.
