The three main growing mediums compared by yield, difficulty, cost, and control. Choose the right one for your grow.
The growing medium you choose affects everything: how fast plants grow, how often you water, what nutrients you use, and how difficult your grow is to manage. Soil is the most forgiving. Hydroponics is the most powerful. Coco coir is the sweet spot in between for most serious growers.

Beginners: start with quality soil (Fox Farm Ocean Forest or Royal Gold). Intermediate: move to coco + perlite for better yields with manageable difficulty. Advanced/maximum yield: DWC hydroponics. Most experienced home growers end up on coco — it's the best combination of yield and control.
Does hydroponics produce bigger yields than soil?
Yes, by a significant margin. DWC hydroponics typically produces 30-50% more yield than equivalent soil grows, because roots have direct access to oxygen and nutrients. However, this requires mastering pH, EC, and water temperature management. Mistakes in hydro hurt faster than in soil.
What is coco coir and why is it popular?
Coco coir is the fiber from coconut husks. As a growing medium it's pH-neutral, holds moisture well while draining freely, and allows roots to access more oxygen than soil. It's run like hydroponics (liquid nutrients every watering) but looks and feels like soil. It's the most popular medium for experienced home cannabis growers.
Can I reuse soil or coco coir?
Soil can be re-amended and reused (called re-cooking) by adding compost, worm castings, and cover crops between cycles. This is popular in organic growing. Coco coir is typically not reused due to salt buildup — it's usually recycled or composted. DWC systems are drained and cleaned between cycles.
What growing medium is best for autoflowers?
Autoflowers perform best in light, airy media. A mix of quality soil with 30-40% perlite is ideal — it prevents overwatering (the most common autoflower killer) while keeping root zone well-oxygenated. Coco is also excellent for autos when watered correctly.
